How did we get so much stuff? Nothing makes you feel more American like going through all the crap you've accumulated in your three-bedroom house while families around the world sleep eight to a room and carry all their worldly possessions in a single knapsack. We considered just chucking everything and totally starting over in the Philippines, but--as much as I hate to admit it--we are a bit bourgeois (just a bit, right?). We do have a few pieces of furniture and art we wanted to hold on to. Once you do that, though, you commit to sending a full shipping container; and once you get the container, it doesn't matter if you send a single chair or stuff it full--it costs the same. Which do you think we did?
The rest of our junk left behind was distributed to kind and eager neighbors in my "Free Sh#t Extravaganza" on Wednesday, which was a rousing success. Now we are house- and dog-sitting for friends, which has been a wonderful help in this last week of errand-running and account-settling. One more week and we fly the fur to San Diego. Stay posted!
