"I Can't...I Have Volleyball."

Between a busy teaching schedule and head coaching boys' volleyball, I haven't had much of a life recently. Ask Stephen. So, my blog posting has obviously suffered. That doesn't mean I haven't done anything interesting, so I thought I'd update the die-hard fans (I like to think I have fans) with a few photos.
On one long weekend, we went with friends to Subic Bay, formerly the largest overseas U.S. naval base in the world, and now a free port. It is a popular vacation spot for those who want to be surrounded by green, because the huge swaths of land that used to belong to the Americans and are now protected preserves are about the most natural landscape you can see within two hours of Manila. No one is allowed in the free port except via private car, so there are no jeepneys, no buses, no squatters...heck, there's hardly anyone living there at all. Except for the fact that most people there are in fact Filipino now, you'd really have thought you'd left the country. We stayed in faculty housing (our school has a sister school there), which had central air conditioning and almost painful water pressure in the shower. It was awesome. And so wierd.
We rode there in the "party van" with our friends the Richmonds and their two kids, the eldest of whom is demurely pictured above. They are great travel companions, all of them; the boys could entertain themselves for hours on the beach while we all sat around and had a few beers. Now, that's a vacation.
Whoa, Stephen, your legs are reflecting sun into the lens, they're so white! Ha ha. We didn't stick around this beach for too long because it soon started pouring rain. That's August for you in the Philippines.
This last shot is from only a week ago when I traveled to another school in Antipolo, due east of Manila, for a volleyball tournament. We got there just as sunset (or "smogset" as shown in this photo) was illuminating the skyline. I thought it was sort of a nice parting shot. Until next month...
