You Can Take The Girl Outta Columbus...

Okay, so I do miss one thing over here: real sports on t.v., i.e. football. And by "football" I mean the good stuff, not soccer or "footie" (rugby in Australian)--both sports of the highest caliber, but not enough to satisfy what remains of my Midwestern roots. Star Sports (ESPN Asia) does show American football occasionally, college football even more occasionally, but they seem to have an exclusive contract with the PAC 10 Conference. I mean, come on, outside of USC, what other teams are of any consequence? I'm not a big fan of the Southeastern Conference, as you might imagine, but at least it's a solid group of tough pigskin programs (they could be a little less tough, by the way). And to overlook the Big Ten is unforgivable. Neither the Ohio State-Michigan game nor the BCS Championship Game made it on their schedule. I am sure there was an important billiards tournament to show instead.

As a result, I went to great lengths to see the championship game, waking up at 5 am to get myself to the only game venue I could find: Starbucks. I harassed my friend Ben to commute from Quezon City into Makati during the morning rush so we could meet at, yes, Starbucks, pay $2.50 an hour for their wifi (ouch!), and watch the game via the internet. Ben has something called SlingBox, which is hooked up to a friend's cable box in the States. Ben can then remotely operate this friend's television and watch it via streaming video. The picture wasn't perfect, but when the wifi speed was high it was quite good. We were there at 8:30 am ready for the game--too bad no one woke up the Buckeyes. Sigh.

Right in the middle of the game, my husband texted me: "Whenever you watch the game these guys seem to choke. Maybe you should just give up." What a guy.
